BLAENAVON HERITAGE RAILWAY
Blaenavon’s Heritage Railway steam and diesel locomotives run at the highest altitude of any standard gauge preserved railway in England and Wales.
Between Easter and Christmas, trains travel along nearly three miles of track between four restored stations on the former GWR Blaenavon High Line, which once transported coal and passengers throughout the South Wales valley.
Passengers enjoy stunning views of the imposing industrial landscape, passing the picturesque Garn Lakes and award-winning Big Pit National Mining Museum of Wales.
The railway’s hard-working volunteers also organise a range of family-friendly events throughout the year. These include a 1940s weekend, transport rally and steam gala. The hugely popular Halloween Trains are a scary annual experience and the busy Santa Special services take families on a train ride to Santa’s Grotto at the newly refurbished Blaenavon High Level Station.
