BLAENAVON COMMUNITY MUSEUM
Based in the magnificent Workmen’s Hall and run by a team of volunteers, Blaenavon Community Museum celebrates the proud cultural heritage of Blaenavon and the South Wales coalfield in general.
The museum hosts a range of exhibitions depicting Blaenavon society in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also hosts the Blaenafon Community Archive - a digital library of historical photographs of the town and its people - and a number of books on the history of Blaenavon.
Displays include a large collection of photographs, books, furniture and military uniforms relating to local choirs and music, churches and chapels, friendly societies, schools, war heroes, recreation, sport and leisure, shops and businesses and trades unions.
The museum also curates artefacts connected with the Kennard family, who were Directors of the Blaenavon Iron and Coal Company during the 19th century and influential figures in the iron industries of Great Britain and continental Europe.
Also on display are the personal effects of the famous novelist Alexander Cordell (1914-1997), author of the international bestseller Rape of the Fair Country, which was partially set in Garnddyrus in Blaenavon’s mountainside.
